Artist Statement

My current practice delves into the realms of introspection and emotional processing through the lens of the natural and immediate landscapes that surround us. My work is an exploration of the intricate relationship between the self and the environment, capturing the subtle dialogues that unfold within this interplay. Through a combination of watercolour, drawing, photography, and the creation of books, I document emotional connections with found objects, views, and ephemera that cross my path as I navigate through new locales and experiences.

My fascination with history and its narratives serves as a foundation for understanding our present and shaping my perspective on the world. This curiosity about our past, combined with a profound interest in connections and relationships—whether with people or the environment—guides my artistic exploration. I find solace and calmness in introspection, seeking out spaces that foster reflection and recharging. The concept of psychogeography deeply intrigues me; I am captivated by the ways in which our surroundings can influence our emotions and behaviours.

Nature’s serene and majestic environments, such as beaches and forests, hold a special place in my heart and work. These landscapes are not just backdrops but active participants in my creative process, offering beauty, serenity, and a sense of belonging. The acknowledgement of our own insignificance in the vast timeline of natural history brings comfort and a unique perspective on the transient nature of our existence.

In my recent projects, I am exploring the creation of natural pigments from a variety of sources that reflect marine and arboreal environments. This experimentation with materials such as shells, dried seaweed, and seawater as a medium for painting opens up new avenues for understanding the impact of materiality on artistic outcomes. My work aims to encapsulate the essence of these environments, inviting viewers to engage with the artwork on a deeply personal level.

By integrating these factors into my practice, I aim to create a multifaceted approach to capturing and conveying the complex interplay of emotions, history, and the environment. My work is an invitation to explore the depths of our connections with the world around us, challenging the viewer to see beyond the surface and appreciate the profound interactions that define our existence.
